Understand IMAX Screen Ratios
IMAX screens typically use two main aspect ratios: the classic tall format of 1.43:1 (used in select premium venues with 70mm film or GT Laser projection) and the more common digital IMAX ratio of 1.90:1, which is slightly wider than standard theatrical widescreen. Films shot with IMAX cameras (e.g., Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two) are best experienced in 1.43:1 venues, but most theaters will show them cropped to 1.90:1.
1. Classic IMAX (15/70mm Film & GT Laser)
- Aspect Ratio: 1.43:1 — You see up to 40% more image vertically compared to standard widescreen. Directors like Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve often shoot sequences specifically for this format.
- Screen Shape: Very tall, nearly square compared to standard cinema screens.
- Experience: Offers maximum immersion, filling both vertical and horizontal fields of view.
- Availability: Limited to select IMAX venues worldwide, often science centers or flagship theaters.
- Projection: Uses 70mm film or dual 4K laser projectors.
2. Digital IMAX (IMAX Digital & IMAX with Laser CoLa/XT)
- Aspect Ratio: 1.90:1 — Still larger than normal cinema, but doesn’t show the full IMAX frame. Many blockbusters are optimized for this ratio in multiplexes.
- Screen Shape: Wider than 1.85:1 standard cinema, but not as tall as 1.43:1.
- Experience: Still larger than conventional screens, but less vertically immersive.
- Availability: Most commercial multiplex IMAX theaters use this format.
Classic IMAX vs Digital IMAX Comparison Table
| Format Type | Aspect Ratio | Screen Shape | Availability | Immersion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic IMAX (15/70mm Film & GT Laser) | 1.43:1 | Very tall, nearly square | Limited venues | Maximum immersion |
| Digital IMAX (CoLa/XT) | 1.90:1 | Wider, less tall | Most multiplexes | High immersion |
