IAS Officer Ketan Garg Takes Charge as Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) Commissioner on June 22, 2025.

Former GVMC Commissioner P. Sampath Kumar, who took charge on July 23, 2024, and served until January 22, 2025, has been transferred and appointed as the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration. Since his transfer, the GVMC Commissioner post has remained vacant. During this interim period—from January 22 to June 21, 2025—District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has been handling additional responsibilities.

After months of administrative delay, GVMC finally has a new leader. IAS officer Ketan Garg, from the 2018 batch, officially took charge as the new Municipal Commissioner of Visakhapatnam.

Earlier, Ketan Garg served as the Commissioner of Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation. He was credited with improving civic operations and service delivery. His move to Visakhapatnam is seen as a key step in strengthening the city's urban development.

In his first address to the media, New Commissioner Ketan Garg outlined a comprehensive agenda prioritizing sanitation, beautification, and essential civic infrastructure. “We aim to make Visakhapatnam one of the cleanest cities in India,” he stated, emphasizing the city’s preparation for the upcoming Swachh Survekshan rankings.

Key initiatives announced include:

  • Upgrading drainage systems and ensuring drinking water pipelines are isolated from sewage lines to prevent contamination.
  • Accelerating metro and flyover projects, with full support from GVMC.
  • Revamping parks, junctions, and vacant lands to enhance public spaces.
  • Deploying seasonal health surveys to combat mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.
  • Strengthening CCTV surveillance in coordination with the police department.
