What is the Simhachalam Chandanotsavam Festival in Simhachalam Temple?

Simhachalam Chandanotsavam is an annual Hindu festival celebrated once a year at the Simhachalam Temple. The term 'Chandanotsavam' is derived from two words: 'Chandan' meaning sandalwood, and 'Utsavam' meaning festival or celebration.

On this sacred day, devotees are granted the rare and divine opportunity to witness the original form of the idol, Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy—referred to locally in Telugu as the Nijaroopa Darshanam of Lord Appanna Swamy.

The sandalwood paste covering the idol is ceremoniously removed on this occasion, revealing the true form of the deity. This event takes place only once a year on Chandanotsavam day. This year, devotees can witness it on April 20, 2026. In 2025, the Chandanotsavam festival was celebrated on April 30.

During this time, a large number of Hindu devotees visit the temple, and there is usually a huge crowd. If you are planning to attend the Simhachalam Chandanotsavam Festival, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning. Darshan tickets can be purchased, ranging from ₹300 to ₹5000. Free darshan queues are also available for devotees who choose not to buy tickets.
